Letters to Yourself

The instructions were simple.

"Write a letter to yourself, then in one year or more, I will return the letters to you.  I will not open them so you can write whatever you want.  Think about what’s important to you, what’s been on your mind, and maybe some advice you’d like to give yourself in one year."

I did this every year with every class for seven years and now I have a box of these letters that I have never returned – and it’s been ten years.

I intend to find the students, see what they are doing now (all are well over 18 years of age now), and have them open and read their letters.  If they like, they can either send me a video of their responses and stories, or they will be interviewed.

And I am making a documentary about this journey.

  1. This is such a great idea, Jesse.

I think I may consider doing this 🙂

  2. What a great idea! I bet everyone will appreciate this. I think I’ll try it on my boys.

  3. The kids always loved doing this. I had to make sure to “set the scene” to make sure they took it seriously.

Unfortunately, I used to move around a lot as a teacher so I wouldn’t be there the next year. Thus, the box of letters.
